Ecological Studies of Symbiosis in Convoluta roscoff ensis
نویسنده
چکیده
The size of the Convoluta roscoffensis population on a beach in Herm, Channel Islands is subject to wide seasonal variation, being very low in early summer and high in autumn and winter. Of the ecological factors measured, only light -expressed a s photosynthetically active radiation showed a correlation with population size. Low worm numbers, and also low numbers of algae and chlorophyll a content per worm, were associated with high light intensities, and vlce versa. Worm spacing within colonies, however, remained relatively constant, with a mean value of 9 X 105 worms m-*. Estimates of photosynthetic cover (chlorophyll biomass) of 320 mg chlorophyll a m-', and annual primary productivity for 1977, of 872.9g carbon fixed m-' of colony, approach estimates for coral reefs; they were remarkably high for the potentially disturbed environment of the intertidal sandy beach.

Impact assessment of an invasive flatworm, Convoluta convoluta, in the Southern Gulf of Maine
Convoluta convoluta (Abildgaard 1806) is a small (2–3 mm long) acoellous turbellarian flatworm from Europe that has invaded the Gulf of Maine within the last 5 years. Although it has been reported in densities of up to 19 individuals/cm, its ecological impact remains unknown. In its native habitat, it consumes harpacticoid copepods and primary settling mussels < 0.5-mm shell length. This study ...

متن کاملMorphological characterization via light and electron microscopy of Atlantic jackknife clam (Ensis directus) hemocytes.
The Atlantic jackknife clam, Ensis directus, is currently being researched as a potential species for aquaculture operations in Maine. The goal of this study was to describe the hemocytes of this species for the first time and provide a morphological classification scheme. We viewed hemocytes under light microscopy (using Hemacolor, neutral red, and Pappenheim's stains) as well as transmission ...
متن کاملParthenium hysterophorus: Novel adsorbent for the removal of heavy metals and dyes
Heavy metals and dyes are major contributors in contamination of water streams. These contaminants enter into our eco- system, thus posing a significant threat to public health, ecological equilibrium and environment. Thus a combined discharge of these contaminants results in water pollution with high chemical oxygen demand, biological oxygen demand, color, particulate matter, suspended particl...

The coupling ratio for the transport of beta-alanine and Na+, H+ and Cl- in luminal membrane vesicles isolated from proximal convoluted tubules (pars convoluta) and proximal straight tubules (pars recta) of rabbit kidney was examined. Indirect evidence indicates that 1 H+ and approx. 2 Na+, 1 Cl- (Na(+)-dependent, high-affinity) or 1 Na+ (Na(+)-dependent, low-affinity) are co-transported with b...
